About the Pedestrian Committee

This Committee (ANF10) is concerned with research on pedestrians and pedestrian facilities that will provide safe, comfortable, and efficient walking environments along sidewalks, along and across roadways, and connecting to other modes of transportation. The Committee addresses the planning, design, operation, and maintenance of roadways as they affect use of public rights-of-way by pedestrians. The Committee aims to integrate pedestrian considerations into broader transportation issues.

This Committee is chaired by Dr. Ron Van Houten (ron.vanhouten@wmich.edu) of Western Michigan University.

The Pedestrian Committee has two subcommittees: the Research Subcommittee and the Papers Subcommittee. The Research Subcommittee is responsible for identifying pedestrian research needs/topics and problem statements; locating organizations to fund and conduct pedestrian research; and tracking previous, ongoing, and upcoming research. The Papers Subcommittee is responsible for the paper review process and developing the pedestrian program at the Annual Meeting. These subcommittees report progress and findings during the general Pedestrian Committee meetings.

The committee's web site moderator is Kevin Chang (Kevin.Chang@metrokc.gov) of King County, Washington. The web site is maintained by Laura Sandt (sandt@hsrc.unc.edu) of the UNC Highway Safety Research Center.
